She felt the bubble pop inside her lungs and didnt say a Word. Why are we doing this to ourselves? she said and she thought. The Kern river water seeped out of her eyes. I hate this town. A wind blew through and the clouds whistled and the dust swam up into her eye. What are we doing here? she asked. I want to die. She took her arm away from her neck. Don’t say that, ever. She took in a gust. The one before you cut herself. She felt the bubble rising up again. She stared up at the blue and orange ceiling and told herself to breathe. Breathe. She couldn’t. Worms started spilling out of the scars under her eyebrows. She covered her lips with a basil leaf, trying to block out the smell. Get me out of here.

When I was a kid…she translated. I ran away a lot. I thought I was the root of their problems. She breathed in a yellow butterfly. Then he came in my mouth, and it all came back again. Her hands reached up to suffocate the sadness out of her face. The butterfly started to panic. I never dealt with it. She thought of the time Violet said I was raped while drinking a clear glass of water, the coolness sliding down her throat and settling into her stomach. It had made her angry with jealousy. She was ok with it. She was ok with it! She tried to drink in the crocodiles bursting out of her face and only felt cancerous. She pulled at the apple growing in her throat and, like a cork, popped, and the crystal ribbons started to run from her eyes to her ears, and she was swimming. She swam towards the light, careful not to open her mouth and drown the butterfly.

Don’t let this change us. Don’t love me any more or any less. She burst out of the surface of the water, and they floated downstream together, towards the Mississippi.
